BBC semi-finals set: Pace, Imhotep, Evanston, Dillard

Pace 51, Westchester 46 – Pace (6-6; Atlanta, GA) led by double figures in the final four minutes before having to hold off the Westchester Comets (10-5; Los Angeles, CA) 51-46 to advance to the semifinal round of the 2016 Beach Ball Classic.

Pace built a 45-34 lead with 4:16 to play on a pair of free throws by Wendell Carter.  Westchester closed the gap to just three points at 49-46 on a Cedric Simmons 3-pointer with 31 seconds remaining on the clock.  Mark Sommerville then missed a pair of free throws for Pace but Isaiah Kelly grabbed the offensive rebound.  Reign Watkins then hit a pair of freebies with 6 seconds remaining to give the Knights a 51-46 lead.Chris Simmons missed on a 3-point attempt the next possession for Westchester to end the comeback bid.

Wendell Carter, who has signed with Duke, led Pace with 19 points and 15 rebounds.  Kelly chipped in 15 points and 11 boards for the Knights.

Westchester was led by Darryn Everage’s 24 points.

 

Imhotep 72, Bishop Gorman 54 -Imhotep (6-1; Philadelphia, PA) scored a 72-54 upset victory over Bishop Gorman (8-4; Las Vegas, NV) to advance to the semifinal round of the 2016 Beach Ball Classic.

Imhotep led the entire first half and held a slim 29-28 advantage at halftime.  Bishop Gorman grabbed its only lead of the game at 31-29 the start of the second half on Jamal Bey’s 3-point field goal with 14:30 on the clock.  The lead was short-lived as Imhotep tied the game and then took the lead for good with 14:01 to play on Daron Russell’s layup.

With the lead at just three points at 40-37 at the 10:44 mark, Imhotep went on a 15-1 run to take a commanding 55-38 lead with 7:50 to play.  The lead remained in double digits the rest of the game and reached as many as 24 points in the closing minutes.

Imhotep was led by Russell’s 25 points on 0-of-8 shooting from the field.  David Beatty added 17 points and six rebounds while Koby Thomas had three highlight reel dunks in route to his 12 points off of the bench for the Panthers.

Bishop Gorman was led by Jamal Bey’s 18 points while Chuck O’Bannon added 13 points.

 

Evanston 68, Scott County 59 – Evanston Township (12-1; Evanston, IL) advanced to the semifinal round to face Pace (GA) with a 68-59 victory over Scott County (KY).

Leading 31-24 at halftime, Evanston’s Elyjah Williams scored the opening basket of the second half to take a 33-24 advantage.  Scott County responded with a 7-2 run to pull to within four points at 35-31 with 13:15 on the clock.  After trading baskets for several minutes, Bryce Long completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 6:38 to play to pull Scott County to within two points at 47-45.

Evanston continued to hold the slim lead at 50-47 before blowing the game wide open with a 12-0 run that gave the Wildkits a 62-47 lead with 1:53 to play.

Evanston was led by Nojel Eastern’s 12 points and seven rebounds.  Michael Moreno paced Scott County with 22 points and six boards.

 

Dillard 53, Bishop O’Connell 41 -Dillard (11-3; Ft. Lauderdale, FL) led wire to wire in its quarterfinal matchup against Bishop O’Connell (7-4; Arlington, FL) in route to a 53-41 victory.

In the opening half, Dillard held the Knights to just 31.3 percent shooting from the field (5-16) and forced them into 13 turnovers.  Dillard used its defense to key the offense, scoring 18 points off of turnovers and taking a 31-17 lead at halftime.  The Panthers went on to lead by as many as 20 points in the second half.

Dillard was led by Jordan Wright with 22 points while Matt Lewis paced Bishop O’Connell with 13 points and six rebounds.
