Beach Ball Recap, Day 5: Henry sparks Saints’ rally

Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach and standout senior Kendall Henry took full advantage of their time on the big stage Sunday at the Beach Ball Classic.

Henry recorded another double-double with game-highs of 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Saints (12-4) to a 65-56 victory over Cape Fear (NC) Academy in an exhibition game at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Henry sparked the Saints on a furious second-half rally in which he scored 13 of the team’s 18 points during a pivotal late stretch. Trailing 40-38 with 7 minutes remaining, Henry re-entered the game and turned the tide.

Henry hit a jumper, made a steal and converted a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to give CAMB the lead. Henry then grabbed a defensive rebound, an offensive rebound and made another “and one” to make it 46-40 just over 1 minute after coming off the bench.

Henry’s one-man, eight-point run also lifted his teammates, as Austin Guyton, Cole Gore and Josh Lang scored on consecutive possessions to extend the streak. Henry’s ensuing 3-pointer and putback made it 56-42 with 4 minutes left, all but clinch the victory.

Teammate Bernard Jones also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Gore added 10 points. Guyton finished with nine points and Lang added seven as the Saints got the rare opportunity to play in front of a large crowd at a big venue.

Despite winning three SCISA Class A state championships, CAMB has played its home games at First Baptist Church and Myrtle Beach Middle School while awaiting the completion of a new school and gymnasium in 2013. The Saints are scheduled to open their new gym this season, but the chance to play at MBCC was a bonus.

The game was followed by a second exhibition between Mullins and the Hammond School, followed by the Beach Ball Classic Slam Dunk and 3-Point Contests. The tournament concludes Monday with a full slate of games, capped by the championship game at 7:30 p.m. between Bishop O’Connell (VA) and Whitney Young (IL).

* Mullins 66, Hammond School 32: The Auctioneers dominated the game from the opening tip as Dmitri Reaves scored 20 points, Jalek Felton added 19 and Alex Brown netted 18 for Mullins.

* LJ Peak of Whitney Young (IL) won the Beach Ball Classic Slam Dunk Contest and Travis Lankins of Franklin (OH) won the 3-point shooting contest.
