Bennett taken in 2nd round of MLS Supplemental Draft

Coastal Carolina forward Ashton Bennett, the Chanticleers’ first ever two-time first team All-American, was the 20 overall pick of the 2013 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft held on Tuesday.

Bennett, a native of Clarendon, Jamaica, was selected by Toronto FC with the first pick of the second round. Bennett is scheduled to start preseason training at the end of the month with Toronto FC, which finished the 2012 season with a 5-21-8 overall record, earning 23 points in the MLS standings.

Bennett, who was ranked as a top forward entering the draft by the experts at MLSsoccer.com, turned in a stellar effort two weeks ago at the MLS Combine. The speedy striker scored two goals – each coming against an NSCAA All-American goalkeeper – and added an assist as he helped the adiZero team to a 2-0-1 record.

Bennett was not selected in last week’s MLS Draft, however, over concerns he may be planning to play overseas. It is still unclear whether Bennett will sign to play for Toronto in the MLS or hold out for a better offer in another league.

Bennett is the eighth Chanticleer to be drafted by an MLS club and third in the past three seasons. Defensive midfielder Cyprian Hedrick was the 30th overall selection by Sporting Kansas City in 2012 SuperDraft and Joe Anderson, a forward, was taken first overall by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 2010 Supplemental Draft.

Overall, Bennett is the eighth Chanticleer drafted by an MLS club dating back to the 2004 season. In addition to the Chants’ recent draft selections, netminder Scott Angevine (2008-11) earned a free agent contract with Sport Kansas City last season and is currently an MLS League Pool goalkeeper.

Bennett finished his Coastal Carolina career ranked sixth all-time with 39 goals, tied for seventh all-time with 94 points (39g, 16a) and ninth all-time with 184 shot attempts despite only playing 47 games in a Chanticleer uniform. He led Coastal Carolina to a 38-7-2 overall record, two NCAA Tournament appearances, three NCAA Tournament wins and a pair of Big South regular season championship with a perfect 19-0 record (9-0 in 2011 and 10-0 in 2012).

He became only the second Chanticleer to be named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, garnering the honor in both 2011 and 2012. Bennett also became one of three players to ever win the Big South’s Player of the Year award in back-to-back seasons (2011 and 2012).
