Bennett wins Mini Marathon as Zola Budd finishes sixth

Brady Bennett of Rome, Ga., won the men’s Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon, Christa Iammarino took the women’s title, and a familiar name was right on their heels as the top local finisher.

Zola Budd Pieterse, a two-time Olympian and World Cross Country champion, who now lives in Myrtle Beach via South Africa and England, took sixth place overall and first in the women’s 65-69 division with a time of 1 hour, 19 minutes, 55 seconds.

The 45-year-old Budd, who may be best remembered for running barefoot and her on-track collision with American Mary Decker in the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, twice held the world record in the women’s 5000 meters. She now coaches cross country at Coastal Carolina University.

Bennett blew away the competition in the second annual event, covering the 13.1-mile course in 1:13:46. He finished almost 2 minutes ahead runner-up Michael Olivia of Croton on Hudson, N.Y., followed by Christopher Capps of Willow Springs, N.C., and Ken Youngers of Decatur, Ga.

Iammarino broke the women’s tape in 1:19:36, but Budd Pieterse was close behind and drew a chorus of cheers from the crowd.

Dwayne Carter of Conway was the top local male, finishing seventh overall with a time of 1:20:24. Other top 20 locals included Vincent Avitable of Myrtle Beach in 11th (1:21:20), John Hynes of Myrtle Beach in 14th (1:22:18), Dan Butler of Myrtle Beach in 17th (1:23:52) and Bratton Ferrell of Myrtle Beach in 19th (1:25:19).

  1. John says:

Zola is 45 years old. Not 65 as article indicates

  2. admin says:

Thanks John. We do our best to get all the facts right, but sometimes we just flat out miss it. I’ve made the correction.
