Bess uses luck, skill to win big at Guy Daniels Memorial

Winning the grand-prize longboard in the Guy Daniels Memorial Surf-off raffle was all luck for Shawn Bess. But taking first place in the Men’s Open Division championship, all skill.

Bess captured the championship in the main event at the 14th annual Guy Daniels Memorial Surfoff, then had his name drawn to win the grand prize, which was donated by the Island Surf and Paddleboard Company. The paddleboard may have been the most expensive prize, but the trophy in the Surfside Beach event was the big score.

Hundreds of local surfers competed in the fundraiser, which provides scholarships to local students pursuing higher education. More than $50,000 has been raised to send deserving students to college since the inception of the Surf-off.
