Big season propels Coastal QB Ross to FCS watch list

ccufoot-rossatuscCoastal Carolina junior Alex Ross has been named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS Quarterback of the Year Watch List. Earlier, the publication named Chanticleer senior Quinn Backus to its Linebacker of the Year Watch List.

Ross is coming off an exceptional 2013 campaign, earning first team All-Big South in his first year at the helm of the Chanticleer offense. Under his direction, Coastal set 25 school and 17 Big South single season offensive records. The Alpharetta, Ga., product led Coastal to a 12-3 record, an appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship quarterfinals and a final national ranking of seventh. He completed 232-of-358 passes (.648) for 3,093 yards with nine interceptions and 26 touchdowns while adding 540 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

Ross led the Big South in nine categories while ranking sixth in the NCAA FCS in passing efficiency (156.3), 14th in passing touchdowns (26), 14th in points responsible for (194), 16th in passing yards (3,093), 18th in passing yards per completion (13.33), 19th in the NCAA FCS in completion percentage (.648), 28th in points responsible for per game (14.3), 29th in total offensive yards per game (259.5) and 33rd in passing yards per game (220.9).

Of Coastal’s top seven games for most yards of total offense, Ross has been under center in six of those, including five starts. This past year, he led CCU to 652 yards at Elon and 642 yards versus Presbyterian, which rank 1-2 on the school’s single-game list. He additionally led CCU to 631 yards at Eastern Kentucky (4th on the single-game list), played the second half as CCU rolled up 625 yards at Presbyterian in 2012 (5th on the list), was the starter while tallying 621 yards versus Charlotte and – in his lone start as a freshman – led CCU to 596 yards at Gardner-Webb.

In 21 career games at Coastal, Ross has completed 258-of-406 passes (.635) for 3,520 yards with 10 interceptions and 31 touchdowns. His 156.6 career pass efficiency to date is a school record. Ross also has the two longest pass plays in CCU history, completing an 86-yard touchdown to DeMario Bennett in an NCAAA second-round playoff win at Montana this past season and an 81-yard touchdown completion to Niccolo Mastromatteo in his first career start at Gardner-Webb in 2012.
