Blackman’s bat helps Chants complete sweep of Citadel

Ted Blackman went 3-for-3 with a four RBI, including a two-run home run, to lead Coastal Carolina to a 10-2 win over The Citadel Wednesday night at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Chanticleers, winners in 10 of its last 12 games, improve to 17-12, including a 3-2 win at The Citadel Tuesday, while the Bulldogs fall to 16-14.

Coastal Carolina took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Blackman drew a leadoff walk and scored on Jacob May’s RBI double in the right-center field gap. May took third on Alex Buccilli’s infield single and scored on Will Remillard’s RBI fielder’s choice ground out. A throwing error on the play allowed Remillard to take second. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on Jake Kane’s bloop single to left field.

The Citadel trimmed its deficit to one, 3-2, in the fourth. Taylor Griffin drew a leadoff walk and Bailey Rush singled. A wild pitch moved the two runners up. Griffin scored on Johnathan Stokes ground out, putting Rush on third. Jason Smith followed with an apparent inning-ending ground out, but an error allowed Rush to score. Mason Davis tried to extend the inning with a sharp line drive to first, but Coastal’s Remillard was able to snag the ball to end the threat.

Coastal got those two runs back in the home half of the fourth. Josh Powell drew a leadoff walk and Blackman hit a two-run blast over the right field walk for his second home run of the season.

The Bulldogs threatened again in the fifth as Drew DeKerlegend and Joe Jackson walked to start the frame. Aaron Burke came out of the bullpen to retire DeKerlegend at third on an attempted sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, Calvin Orth walked to load the bases but Burke got Rush to ground out to end the inning.

The Chants pushed their advantage to 6-2 in the sixth. Zach Remillard had a leadoff single, Josh Powell walked and Blackman was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. May drove in his second run of the night with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Coastal used a sacrifice fly to take a 7-2 lead in the seventh. Coastal loaded the bases on a singles by W. Remillard and Colin Hering and a walk to Z. Remillard. Powell’s fly out down the right field line was deep enough to score Remillard. Nick Oberg walked to re-load the bases. Blackman welcomed new pitcher Nate Brecklin with a two-run single. A throwing error on the play allowed Oberg to score as well for a 10-2 lead.

Tyler Poole (4-1) earned the win. The redhshirt freshman was on a designated pitch count and left after four innings. He allowed four hits, two runs (one earned) with two walks. Five Chanticleer pitchers combined to pitch five scoreless innings.
