Boys Hoops: Braves, local 7-3A teams win nail-biters

sochoops-cfThis one was more about pride than playoff positioning, and Socastee rose to the occasion when it counted most. The Braves scored the final eight points of double overtime to knock off rival Conway at the Wave on Tuesday night.

The hard-fought region win was the first for the Braves (7-14 overall, 1-6 Region 6-4A) and leaves them in the cellar with the Tigers (12-7, 1-6), who suffered their sixth consecutive loss. The previous two had come by a combined three points.

This one needed two extra periods to settle and Conway appeared in position to put it away with a 63-60 lead late in double OT. But the Braves closed it out with an 8-0 run to complete a comeback from a double-digit deficit in the first half.

Jason Cudd led the Braves with 17 points and Andrew Gardner added 16. Darren Stanley led all scorers with 26 points and Jimmy Nichols chipped in 16.

* St. James 51, Georgetown 46 (OT): The Sharks (11-9, 5-2) survived a scare on the road against the Bulldogs before pulling out the win in overtime.

St. James’ Jordan Fields hit a pair of free throws at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime and he finished with a game-high 12 points. Cavonte Gamble also scored 12 for the Bulldogs (5-15, 1-5).

St. James maintained its spot atop the Region 7-3A standings. The Sharks play host to Myrtle Beach on Friday.

* Myrtle Beach 64, Lake City 62: The Sehawks (7-13, 4-3) captured their fourth consecutive win to move into second place in the Region 7-3A standings.

Myrtle Beach’s JaQuan Chestnut and Robert Swanson scored 12 points apiece and Bryce Schneider added 11. The Seahawks travel to first-place St. James on Friday.

* North Myrtle Beach 65, Wilson 64 (OT): The Chiefs (8-12, 4-3) worked overtime to knock off the Tigers and claim a share of second place in Region 7-3A.

North Myrtle Beach travels to Georgetown on Friday, the first of three road games to close out the regular season.

* West Florence 90, Carolina Forest 63: The Panthers fell to 4-3 in Region 6-4A with a tough loss to the Knights.

Carolina Forest was led by Duane Moss with 25 points and Damon McDowell with 20, but they couldn’t keep pace with the Knights. The Panthers travel to Sumter on Friday.

* Christian Academy 65, Pee Dee Academy 42: The Saints celebrated Senior Night with a final home region win to secure the region regular season title.

The Saints were led by freshmen Michael Green (18 pts, 3 rebs, 4 steals & 3 assists) and Jalen Matthews (17 pts & 15 rebs). The Saints (13-10, 8-0) recognized three seniors: Bernard Jones (5 pts, 8 rebs, 1 steal & 1 block). Ian McCauley (10 pts, 3 rebs, 3 steals & 1 block) and Bennett Pearson (3 rebs).

The Saints (#1 seed) will play the #4 seed in the region tourney next Tuesday at 8 p.m. at host Florence Christian School.
