Boys Hoops: Breakthrough seasons end for CAMB, CF

cambhoops-sjThe Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach boys basketball team saw its season come to a close in a 67-63 overtime loss to Spartanburg Christian on Tuesday night in the second round of the SCISA Class 2A state tournament.

Just as they did all season, the young Saints (17-11) got down early but battled back to make a hard charge in the end. Christian Academy trailed 33-21 at halftime but chipped away at the lead to tie it up entering the fourth quarter at 42-all.

The Saints led by three in the final seconds of regulation but Spartanburg Christian made a game-tying 3-point play to send it into overtime tied at 54-all. The Warriors proved too much for the Saints in the extra period, icing the win at the foul line.

The game mirrored Christian Academy’s roller-coaster season, which saw the youthful and injury-plagued team start with a 3-9 mark. But the Saints won 14 of their final 15 games, including a clean sweep of the region title, to make a run at another state championship.

With a lineup dominated by freshmen and sophomores, the Saints have much to look forward to in the coming season. Freshman Jalen Matthews led the Saints with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and four assists.
