Boys Hoops: CF nips NMB in OT; Sharks down ‘Dogs

The Carolina Forest boys basketball team made their first win of the season a thrilling one.

The Panthers captured a dramatic fashion 72-69 victory over visiting North Myrtle Beach in a back-and-fourth battle that needed overtime to settle it.

The Chiefs poured in 22 points in the opening quarter, but the Panthers answered with a strong second quarter to trim the halftime deficit to 31-30. The Panthers claimed the lead entering the fourth quarter at 48-43 before the Chiefs rallied to tie it up at the end of regulation at 63-all.

The Chiefs used a 6-0 run in overtime to take a 69-65 advantage, but the Panthers scored the game’s final seven points with some clutch free throws down the stretch. North Myrtle Beach got one last shot at a 3-pointer to send it into double OT but couldn’t convert.

Carolina Forest was led by a trip of Panthers with 17 points apiece – Matt Beale, Derek Alston and Mason Garcia 17. The Panthers host Myrtle Beach in a key rematch Friday.

North Myrtle Beach’s Tyron Stockdale scored a game-high 30 points and Cooper Chandler chipped in 15.

* St. James 52, Georgetown 48: The Sharks should some poise down the stretch to pull out a victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

Tied entering the fourth quarter, the Sharks used a balanced team effort to put the game away. Jordan Furlough scored a game-high 16 points. Teammates Marcus Cange had 10 points, Alex Holmes added 9, and Payton Lewis tallied 8.

* Myrtle Beach 67, Socastee 66: The Seahawks escaped with a one-point victory over the Braves at The Wave, holding off a furious comeback by the hosts.

Socastee trailed 40-30 at halftime but used a big third quarter to take a 53-52 advantage. But the Seahawks battled back to claim the series sweep against the Braves.

Socastee was led by Jay Williams with 22 points. Andrew Garnder added 16 points and Kendrell Generette tallied 11.
