Boys Hoops: Chiefs sweep Lions; Sharks, Panthers fall

nmbhoops-2St. James High basketball fans have had their fill of excitement this week but with mixed results. Following a two-point win over Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach earlier this week, the Sharks suffered a close loss at Waccamaw 59-56 on Friday.

St. James trailed by 12 points entering the final frame but rallied to make it a game in the fourth period, thanks in part to Jackson Hurston’s 20 points. Zach Werba, Jordan Fields and William Young scored eight points apiece for the Sharks (4-2).

The Warriors (5-4) got a game-high 24 points from Kennedy Vereen, and Juwan Bryant and Justin Busby added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

St. James plays at West Ashley on Monday.

* Summerville 65, Carolina Forest 60: The Panthers suffer their second loss of the season to the Green Wave in a tight overtime game in which neither team led by more than eight points.

Summerville reached that margin in the fourth quarter but the Panthers rallied to tie the game with just 15 seconds remaining to send it to overtime. They jumped out to a six-point edge in the extra period before the Green Wave defense turned up the pressure and forced several critical turnovers down the stretch.

Carolina Forest got a stellar performance from Damon McDowell with 27 points. Tariq Timmons added 11 and Duane Moss chipped in nine. Carolina Forest prepares to host a talented 16-team field in the Panther classic on Dec. 21-23.

* North Myrtle Beach 67, Loris 53: The Chiefs (2-4) swept the season series from the rival Lions with a home win on Friday.

North Myrtle Beach will host the Shootout by the Sea starting Monday.
