Boys Hoops: Chiefs outlast Sharks; Seahawks fall short

The North Myrtle Beach boys basketball team opened Region 7-3A play with a big victory over visiting St. James 58-50 on Tuesday night.

The Chiefs (11-4 overall, 1-0 region) got a game-high 32 points from senior Jaquan Grissett, who hit 15 of 17 free throws on the night. Many of those clutch foul shots came down the stretch to ice away the win.

“We knew it would be a tough game,” said NMB coach Frank Moorehead. “We knew going in that it would come down to the wire, so we just had to go through those peaks and valleys of the game and keep working through them and learn from them and keep playing hard. … We stayed in the game and let our talent take over.”

The Chiefs led just 41-40 after three quarters but were able to pull away in the fourth. Josh Lindsey added 14 points and he and Grissett went 2-for-5 from 3-point range. Marshawn Scott added eight points.

St. James (10-5, 0-1) was led by Caleb Duggan’s 19 points and TreDarius McCallum added 11. Matt Strange just missed a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring nine points.

* Wilson 68, Myrtle Beach 62: The Seahawks made a late run to get within four points of the Tigers in the fourth quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback in the Region 7-3A opener for both teams.

Solomon Cooper led the Seahawks (7-8 overall, 0-1 region) with 14 points, Nolin Butler added 13 and Mason Lewis chipped in 12. Wilson’s Catrell Rogers led all scorers with 26 points for the Tigers (8-5, 0-1).

* Georgetown 42, Socastee 39: The Braves (4-6 overall, 0-1 Region 7-3A) blew a fourth-quarter lead to the Bulldogs in the region opener for both teams.

Will Caswell led Socastee with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and Adarius McCray scored a team-high 12 points. The Braves were doubled-up in the final period by a score of 14-7.

* West Florence 67, Carolina Forest 52: The Panthers lost their Region 6-4A opener against the visiting Knights on Tuesday night.

Ryan Yurachek led the Panthers (3-11 overall, 0-1 region) with 15 points and Jawan Butler-Stevens and Chris Johnson added 11 apiece.
