Boys Hoops: Chiefs, Saints hold off rivals in nail-biters

nmbhoops-5The North Myrtle Beach boys basketball team withstood a strong second-half comeback by rival Myrtle Beach on Tuesday night to claim a 59-55 victory and take over sole possession of second place in Region 6-5A.

The Chiefs (7-10 overall, 3-1 region) built a double-digit in the first half and held it through three quarters, leading 44-32 entering the final frame. But the Seahawks (8-9, 2-2) came storming back, scoring the first eight points of the period and closing the gap to within one in the final minute.

North Myrtle Beach got a balanced scoring effort, led by Cooper Chandler’s 13 points, Chris Johnson’s 12. and Cason McClendon’s 10. Myrtle Beach got a game-high 18 points from JaQuan Chestnut, 16 from Emory Knox, and 10 from Robert Swanson.

The Seahawks host first-place Wilson on Friday while the Chiefs travel to St. James.

Bryce Schneider exploded for 29 points and Justin Busby and Robert Guyton added 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Saints (12-10, 6-1) move into a first-place tie with Trinity-Byrnes in Region 3-2A.
