Boys Hoops: Conway wins 10th straight over Socastee

conhoops-5layupThe Conway High boys basketball team captured its 10th consecutive win Friday night and took its first step toward trying to win the toughest hoops region in the state by defeating Socastee 75-60.

The No. 4-ranked Tigers, one of three top 10 teams in the Class 5A poll, used a balanced scoring effort and some hot 3-point shooting from Juwon Moody. He connected on four 3-pointer, all coming in the breakout third period, to lead Conway with 14 points.

The Tigers broke open a tied game at halftime at 28-all by outscoring the Braves 29-16 in the third frame. Teammate Jimmy Nichols added 12 points and a total of 10 Tigers got into the score column. Conway faces No. 10-ranked Sumter next week.

Socastee was led by Andrew Gardner’s 22 points and Jason Cudd added 21 for the Braves. The Braves’ game against North Myrtle Beach that was scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled, giving Socastee the weekend to prepare for No. 2 West Florence.

* West Florence 45, Carolina Forest 41: The Panthers opened region play with a tough loss to the No. 2-ranked Knights. Tied at 32-all late in the fourth quarter, West Florence took advantage of four straight turnovers to pull away in the end.

Damon McDowell led the Panthers with 15 points, and Tariq Timmons added 12, Carolina Forest faces South Florence on Tuesday.

* North Myrtle Beach 62, St. James 54: The Chiefs won their Region 7-4A opener against the visiting Sharks, using a second-half surge to get past rival St. James.

North Myrtle Beach trailed throughout the first half before overtaking the Sharks in the third period and holding n for the win. The Chiefs’ previously scheduled game against Socastee on Saturday has been cancelled.

Jordan Furlough had a game-high 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Sharks. St. James returns to action Thursday vs. Myrtle Beach.

* Wilson 77, Myrtle Beach 57: The Seahawks suffered a tough loss to the host Tigers in their Region 7-4A opener.

Robert Swanson scored 12 points to lead the Seagawks and Kylvis Vereen added 10.
