Boys Hoops: Gore, Green honored as Saints rip PDA

cambhoops-goreandgreenOn a big night for the Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach boys basketball program, the Saints made it even more special with a convincing 75-42 victory over visiting Pee Dee Academy on Friday.

Christian Academy coach Darren Gore was honored for 10 years as the program’s only coach and greeted by former players who helped him lead the upstart program to five SCISA state championships in a decade. Gore is stepping down after the season and turning the team over to assistant and former Coastal Carolina standout Colin Stevens.

“It’s been a great run,” said Gore, who has amassed a 192-81 record at CAMB. “Having my former players here tonight was an overwhelming and incredible feeling. A lot of history with these young men.”

Also honored was Christian Academy’s Michael Green, who recently joined the Saints’ 1,000-point club. He was surrounded by fellow members in the contingent of alumni who attended the ceremony, but Green is only a sophomore and is on pace to be the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Green did his part Friday by scoring a game-high 17 points and dishing out four assists. Senior Bryce Schneider tallied 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Justin Busby and Jalen Matthews scored 12 points apiece as the Saints (13-10 overall, 7-1 region) won their fifth straight game. They travel to Dillon Christian on Tuesday.

* Wilson 69, Myrtle Beach 47: For about a half, the Seahawks showed signs they might have something for No. 1-ranked and undefeated Wilson. But once the Tigers got rolling, they were unstoppable.

After Myrtle Beach led as late as midway through the second quarter, Wilson heated up to claim a 30-25 halftime lead. It was all Tigers the rest of the way, outscoring the Seahawks 39-22 in the second half.

Myrtle Beach (8-10, 2-3) plays host to St. James on Tuesday.

* North Myrtle Beach 85, St. James 43: The Chiefs strengthened their stranglehold on second place in the region with a blowout win over the Sharks combined with a loss by Myrtle Beach.

St. James freshman Payton Lewis led the Sharks with 12 points but they were no match for the Chiefs (8-10, 4-1).
