Boys Hoops: MB outbattles NMB in showdown for first

mbhoops-2Everyone anticipated a hard-fought battle between first-place rivals Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach on Friday night, and they got more than expected.

A third-quarter fight spoiled an otherwise classic matchup between the two Region 7-3A rivals, with the Seahawks (7-11 overall, 3-1 region) surging in the fourth quarter for a 63-54 victory over the host Chiefs (10-5, 2-2).

Following a first half that saw neither team lead by more than five points, a fight broke out and several players intervened, forcing the referees to temporarily halt play. Myrtle Beach’s Will Gray and North Myrtle Beach’s Steven Bryant were ejected.

The fight seemed to energize the Chiefs, who closed the third quarter with a 7-1 run for a 41-38 lead. But led by sophomore sharpshooter Bryce Schneider, the Seahawks caught fire to take the win. Schneider scored 16 of his game-high 25 in the fourth period.

Schneider’s three-point play followed by back-to-back jumpers capped a 17-8 run in which he scored 14 of the points and gave the Seahawks their biggest lead at that point of the game at 55-49. Schneider and his teammates hit their free throws down the stretch to cap the win.

Matthew Stanaland led the Chiefs with 12 points.

* St. James 64, Lake City 56: The Sharks (12-3, 3-1) managed to stay tied atop the Region 7-3A standings with Myrtle Beach by defeating the Panthers on the road.

Jackson Hurston scored a game-high 24 points and Zack Werba added 14 for the Sharks. Haywood Brandon had nine points, Tristen Fields scored eight and Jordan Field tallied seven.

* Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 68, Dillon Christian 38: Michael Green scored 16 points and Jaylen Johnson added 14 to lead the Saints (15-5, 5-0) a road victory.

Robert Guyton had 11 points and eight steals, Josh Land had 13 points, and Ian McCauley had six points and rebounds for CAMB.

* Carolina Forest 55, Conway 53: The Panthers shook up the Region 6-4A standings with an upset of the Tigers on their own court.
