mbhoops-swansonblockThe No. 2-ranked Myrtle Beach boys basketball team scored a season sweep over rival Socastee and solidified its spot at the Region 7-3A standings with a 63-45 victory over the visiting Braves on Tuesday night.

The Seahawks (13-5 overall, 5-0 region) led just 29-22 at halftime but caught fire to pull away from the Braves (11-8, 4-2) in the second half. Myrtle Beach outscored Socastee 23-12 in the third quarter to put the game on ice.

Myrtle Beach was led by Brooks Swanson with 16 points and Anthony McNiel added 14. Socastee’s Koel Cutler tallied a game-high 21 points.

The Seahawks can put a virtual lock on the region title with a win at Georgetown on Wednesday. The Braves will face North Myrtle Beach in a key contest for second place in the region.

* Carolina Forest 64, West Florence 58: The Panthers kept their Region 6-4A title hopes alive with an overtime victory over the visiting Knights.

Carolina Forest’s Ryan Yurachek’s team-high 17 points included some clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off West Florence, which hit three 3-pointers in the final minute to force overtime. Zavier Jones scored 16 and Chris Johnson added 10.

* North Myrtle Beach 73, Wilson 53: The No. 8-ranked Chiefs (16-4, 5-1 region) scored a big victory on the road over the Tigers to maintain second place in the region. They face Socastee on Wednesday with second place in the region at stake.
