Boys Hoops: Panthers stun Knights; Tigers top Braves

cfhoops-layupIn its first game since learning about its biggest loss of the season, the Carolina Forest boys basketball team came up with its biggest victory of the season.

Playing without senior star Duane Moss, who learned earlier this week that he is out for the season with a back injury, the Panthers (9-11 overall, 3-4 Region 6-5A) pulled together to upset No. 2 West Florence 38-37 on Thursday night at The Black Hole.

With 6 seconds remaining, Carolina Forest’s Richmond Collier made a nice inbounds pass to Ismael Garcia, who hit the game-winning basket in the final seconds to secure the victory. The Panthers forced a turnover on the Knights final possession as time expired.

In a low-scoring game played at a slow pace, the Panthers prevented the talented Knights from running away like they did in a 22-point win earlier this month. Collier, Garcia and Tariq Timmons led the Panthers with eight points apiece.

Carolina Forest welcomes Sumter on Monday.

* Conway 56, Socastee 38: The Tigers swept the season series with the Braves to stay in contention for the Region 6-5A title.

Conway (14-4, 4-3) built a double-digit lead at halftime and was never threatened in the second half at The Brave Wave. The win sets up a critical home game with No. 2 West Florence on Monday.
