Boys Hoops: Seahawks top Sharks; Chiefs, Braves win

mbhoops-4sjThe No. 2-ranked Myrtle Beach boys basketball team remained undefeated in Region 7-3A play with an easy 63-39 victory over host St. James on Friday night.

Leading just 17-14 after the first quarter, the Seahawks (16-5 overall, 7-0 region) opened the second period with a 16-2 run that saw the Sharks (6-17, 1-7) turn the ball over to set up easy scores by MB.

Myrtle Beach led 47-31 at halftime and was able to empty the bench in the second half. Anthony McNiel led the Seahawks with 10 points and Graham Vaughn added nine to lead a balanced scoring effort.

* North Myrtle Beach 54, Georgetown 49: The No. 8-ranked Chiefs (18-4, 7-1) stayed hot on the heels of rival Myrtle Beach in the region chase by knocking off the Bulldogs on the road.

The Chiefs shot just 36 percent from the floor and were held to only three points in the third quarter, but they got a game-high 20 points from Josh Lindsey and 16 from Matthew Stanaland to hold off the Bulldogs.

NMB remains one win behind the Seahawks in the region standings. The Chiefs face Socastee on Tuesday before closing out the regular season against Myrtle Beach on Friday.

* Socastee 49, Wilson 44: The Braves (13-9, 5-3) scored a big road win to salvage an otherwise tough week for the team.

Coming off back-to-back road losses to first-place Myrtle Beach and second-place North Myrtle Beach earlier this week, Socastee got back on the winning track and sits alone in third place entering the final week of the regular season.

* Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 61, Cathedral Academy 46: The Saints (16-6, 8-1) came within one more win of locking up the region championship with a road win over Cathedral Academy.

Garrett Richards and Austin Guyton recorded double-doubles with 14 and 13 points, respectively, and 10 rebounds apiece. The Saints need only to win their final region game next week to claim the region title.

* West Florence 71, Conway 58: The Tigers’ playoff chances took a hit with a region loss to the Knights.
