Boys Hoops: Sharks scrape past Bulldogs; Panthers roll

sjhoops-30With leading scorer Jackson Hurston experiencing an off-shooting night, St. James had to rely on a balanced scoring attack and a big defensive effort to survive a scare from visiting Georgetown 47-41 on Friday night at the Shark Tank.

The Sharks (7-8 overall, 1-1 Region 7-3A) trailed 31-30 entering the final period but took the lead for good when Hurston made a key assist and followed it up with one of only two field goals on the night to put St. James on top late.

But the Bulldogs made them earn it at late at the free throw line. Leading 43-41 in the final seconds, Hurston and Trey Myers hit a pair of foul shots to ice St. James’ first region win of the season.

Zach Werba picked up most of the offensive slack with a team-high 13 points. Myers had eight, Drew McCann scored seven, and Hurston was held to seven on the night following a 21-point performance in his last outing.

St. James travels to Myrtle Beach on Tuesday.

* Carolina Forest 81, South Florence 50: The Panthers remained perfect in region play with a blowout over the visiting Bruins.

Coming off an upset of No. 2 West Florence in Tuesday’s Region 6-4A opener, the Panthers (11-4, 2-0) proved they are a serious contender for the league title as the only remaining unbeaten team just one week into region play.

The Panthers matched their season high offensive output of the season of 81. Richmond Collier scored a game-high 22 points and Duane Moss added 15. Matthew Weatherwax and Xavier Lynch tallied 13 and 10, respectively.

* West Florence 79, Socastee 59: The Braves picked a bad time to catch the No. 2-ranked Knights, who were coming off an upset loss to Carolina Forest and took it out on Socastee.

* Lake City 54, Myrtle Beach 51: The Seahawks (3-12, 0-2) remained winless in region play with a tough loss at Lake City.

* Wilson 55, North Myrtle Beach 45: The Chiefs suffered their first region loss of the season on the road to the Tigers.
