Boys Hoops: Tigers top SF; Braves knock off Panthers

conhoops-42jThe Conway High boys moved back into region title contention Friday night, winning their second league victory in three nights with a 63-49 victory over visiting South Florence.

Conway’s Jimmy Nichols had a huge night for the Tigers (13-3, 3-2 Region 6-5A) with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds – both team-highs. The Tigers take on Sumter next week looking for their third straight region win.

* Socastee 46, Carolina Forest 39: The Panthers’ playoff hopes took another serious hit with a road loss to the Braves, their third straight league defeat.

The Braves (9-8, 2-3) doubled up the Panthers (7-11, 1-4) in the third quarter by a 22-11 margin to take control of the game. Led by Jaylen Johnson’s 15 points, Carolina Forest managed to cut a 12-point deficit down to five over the final 2 minutes but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Socastee travels to West Florence on Tuesday while Carolina Forest goes on the road to South Florence the same night.

* Myrtle Beach 57, Marlboro County 41: Ten different Seahawks scored, led by Robert Swanson with 11 points, to down the visiting Bulldogs.

Leading only 21-17 at halftime, the Seahawks (8-8 overall, 2-1 Region 7-4A) doubled their output in the third quarter in outscoring the Bulldogs 21-10 in the period. Myrtle Beach travels to take on region rival North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday.

* Wilson 76, St. James 51: The Sharks cut a 36-12 halftime deficit in half in a late comeback bid but the first place Tigers responded to pull away in the end.

St. James junior Jordan Furlough led the Sharks with 20 points and senior Trey Myers scored 16 points. The Sharks (7-12, 1-3) snap right back into action Saturday when Waccamaw visits the Shark Tank.

* Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 78, King’s Academy 27: The Saints stormed to another region victory, led by Michael Green’s game-high 23 points.

Bryce Schneider added 12 points and Justin Busby tallied to 10 as Christian Academy leveled its overall record to 10-10 and its region mark to 5-1.
