Boys Soccer: Socastee, MB record shutouts; NMB falls

The top-seeded Socastee boys soccer team sailed through the first round of the Class 5A playoffs just as they did through the regular season, shutting out visiting Summerville 4-0 at The Reservation.

Socastee standout Chris Matleshewski scored a pair of goals and teammates Ashton Newman and Josh Mackie also found the back of the net for the Braves. Goalkeeper John Cetin earned the shutout.

The Braves advance to the second round Thursday when they will host the winner of Dutch Fork and Ashley Ridge.

* Myrtle Beach 8, Beaufort 0: Seahawks sensation Sam Coughlin scored the game’s first six goals and the defense did the rest in a first-round victory in the Class 4A state tournament.

The Seahawks led 6-0 at halftime following the scoring flurry by Coughlin. Robert Swanson and Alex Vasquez added goals in the second half as the defense preserved the shutout.

Myrtle Beach claimed its 20th win of the season and moves on to a second-round showdown with the AC Flora-Crestwood winner at home on Thursday.

* Hilton Head 2, North Myrtle Beach 1: The Chiefs put up a fight but came up empty in the end as their season ends on the road against the Seahawks.

North Myrtle Beach grabbed an early 1-0 lead but Hilton Head tied it at half and got the game-winner on an amazing volley midway through the second half.

The game also marked the final match for longtime head coach Jason Mueller, who is stepping down after 14 seasons at the school.

“Had we not fought hard the entire game and lost, I would be disappointed,” said Mueller, a new father who will continue coaching at the youth level for Coast FA. “But the effort they gave, that was about all I could ask of them.”

* St. James 3, Stall 1: The Sharks won their first-round matchup at home to advance to the second round on the road against top-seeded Chapin on Thursday.

* Spring Valley 3, Carolina Forest 1: The Panthers’ season came to an end against the Vikings in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
