Braves beat Chiefs in 2 OTs to secure final playoff spot

The Socastee boys basketball team locked up the fourth and final playoff spot in Region VIII-AAA on Tuesday night, but it didn’t come easily.

The Braves (12-9 overall, 4-5 region) had to work double overtime before knocking off visiting North Myrtle Beach (10-10, 2-7) 71-61 at The Wave thanks to a key run in the final extra period.

Socastee’s Travis Frye exploded for a game-high 31 points to lead the Braves to victory. He made it a double-double performance by grabbing 10 rebounds and hit 12 of 14 from the free throw line to help the Braves ice the game.

Donovan Cann also pulled down 10 boards as the Braves outscored the Chiefs 36-8 on points in the paint and outrebounded them by a 47-32 margin. See Man scored 11 points for the Braves.

North Myrtle Beach got a team-high 23 points from Josh Lindsey, whose seventh 3-pointer of the night tied the game at 49-all and sent it into the first overtime period.

Jaquan Grissett tallied 21 points for the Chiefs and Rodrick Hemingway registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Chiefs, who were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss, face rival Myrtle Beach on Thursday.

Socastee locked up the fourth playoff spot in the region and face rival St. James on Thursday in the regular-season finale.
