Baseball: Braves clinch title; MB rallies for big region win

socbase-bubbahomerThe Socastee Braves turned a tight game into a mercy-rule victory over Region 7-3A foe North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, scoring nine runs in the fifth inning to end the game with a 10-0 win in five innings.

The victory allowed Socastee to clinch the region championship and a No. 1 seed in next week’s playoffs.

Tied 1-0 through 4 1/2 frames, the Braves (18-3 overall, 6-0 region) finally got to Chiefs’ starter Kyle Cooper by batting through the order and forcing an early stoppage via the 10-run rule.

Socastee’s Bubba Martin hit a two-run home run to spark the explosive inning. Teammates Hunter Renfrow and Kyle Smith both went 2-for-3, and Jason Farria and Brandon Cuyler each went 1-for-2 with two RBIs apiece.

Socastee starter Sam McKinney kept North Myrtle Beach off the scoreboard for all five innings he was on the rubber. He allowed no runs on four hits while striking out six Chiefs.

The Braves travel to Carolina Forest for a non-region game on Wednesday before facing rival St. James on Friday.

* Myrtle Beach 6, Georgetown 5: The Seahawks improved their playoff positioning with a thrilling extra-inning victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

Myrtle Beach’s Andrew Morris delivered a walk-off RBI single to centerfield that brought home Cody Thomas from second base for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and the Seahawks (12-9, 5-4) spent the entire game catching up. They scored two in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth to even the score at 5-all.

Myrtle Beach’s Zach Coble earned the win. Morris led the offensive effort with a 3-for-5 night at the plate with two RBIs, including the game-winner. The Seahawks are now tied with Bulldogs for second in the region.

* St. James 3, Wilson 2: The Sharks scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning while Skyler Hays and Trent Revis teamed up on the mound to beat the Tigers.
