Braves bring heat to 6-4A by blanking rival Panthers

socbase-4pitchThe Socastee High baseball team opened the 2015 campaign Wednesday the same way the Braves spent most of the 2014 season – with an impressive win fueled by stellar pitching.

Socastee starter Austin Schmitz and reliever Jon Yarbrough combined for a two-hit shutout over host Carolina Forest for a 4-0 victory over its new region rival.

Schmitz struck out five over six scoreless innings to set the table for Yarbrough, who struck out one in turning in a hitless seventh. The duo fooiled a solid outing by Carolina Forest (4-2) pitcher Patrick Orlando, who scattered seven hits over as many innings.

The Braves (1-0), who moved up to Region 6-4A this season after making the Lower State tournament in 2014, scored a pair of runs in the first inning and turned things over to Schmitz until a two-RBI single by Dylan Thompson sealed the win. Buck Bacot went 3-3 and Yarbrough helped his own cause with an RBI.
