Baseball: Braves, Sharks use late rallies to advance

socbase-8slideThe top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Socastee High baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat visiting Darlington 5-4 in Monday’s district tournament winner’s bracket game.

After the Braves (23-4) scored four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-all, Socastee’s Finn Melko used a lead-off double in the seventh inning, a wild pitch and a one-out shot by Jason Farria to score the game-winning run in walk-off fashion.

The Falcons got to Socastee starter Dylan Thompson early and often, outing the Braves by a 10-5 margin. But Thompson and reliever Kyle Smith shut down Darlington over the final four frames to set the stage for the never-say-die Braves to stay unbeaten in the playoffs.

Socastee’s Hunter Renfrow went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Bubba Martin went 2-for-2 with two RBIs to lead the Braves’ breakout fourth inning. Three costly errors by the Falcons aided the comeback and gives the Braves a four-day break before facing the winner of Wednesday’s elimination game between Darlington and Hanahan. Socastee needs only to win one of two games Friday to return to the Lower State tournament.

* St. James 6. Airport 5: The Sharks’ bats caught fire late to defeat the Eagles in their own backyard and stay alive in the district playoffs.

After being held scoreless through four innings, the Sharks scored two in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to take command. Airport scored two in the bottom of the seventh to make it close but St. James reliever Trent Revis shut it down to earn the win.

St. James’ Liam Bloom went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Revis and Skylar Hays, who started on the mound for the Sharks, had two RBIs apiece. The Sharks travel to Marlboro County on Wednesday for an elimination game.

* Midland Valley 2, Myrtle Beach 1: The Mustangs scored the go-ahead run late and held off the Seahawks in an elimination game.
