Braves, Seahawks struggle against Beach Ball powers

Socastee-Beach-BallProvidence 70, Socastee 38 –Providence (FL) scored early and often as the Stallions ran away from Socastee (SC) 70-38 in the opening round of the Beach Ball Classic.

The Stallions (7-3) scored the first 18 points of the game in just 3:12, including five dunks, as they went on to build leads as large as 39 points in the opening half.  In the second half, Providence played none of its original starters in cruising to the win.

Providence was led by Duke signee Grayson Allen’s 18 points in just nine minutes of action.  Allen connected on 7-of-9 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the 3-point arc.  Christian Terrell, who will play for Florida Gulf Coast in college, tallied 12 points in his 10 minutes of action.

Koel Cutler led Socastee (7-3) with 15 points.

Hough 55, Myrtle Beach 39 -Hough (NC) held Myrtle Beach (SC) to the lowest scoring first half in Beach Ball Classic history and then cruised to a 55-39 victory in a consolation bracket contest.

Hough (9-2) used a zone defense that Myrtle Beach could not penetrate and failed to shoot their way out of in the opening 16-minute half.  Myrtle Beach (7-4) hit just 2-of-15 shots from the field, including going 0-for-8 behind the 3-point arc, and committed 10 turnovers in the first half.  The result was a 30-4 score at the break.

It was a different story for the Seahawks in the second half but the hole was too deep to climb out of.  Myrtle Beach connected on 50 percent (12-24) in the second half and committed just four turnovers as they closed the gap to 14 after falling behind by as many as 26.

Luke Maye led Hough with 19 points and 20 rebounds.  The 20 boards ties Maye for the 10th best single game in BBC history, seven behind the record set by Tony Parker of Miller Grove (GA) in 2010.

Myrtle Beach was paced by Solomon Cooper’s 14 points.
