Braves, Sharks win, set up match for Lower State title

socwrest-dylanmartinThe Class 3A Lower State wrestling championship will be settle along a short stretch of Highway 707.

No. 5-ranked Socastee and No. 9-ranked St. James, region rivals that are only separated by about five miles, won their respective Lower State semifinals Monday and will meet Wednesday for the right to go to the state championships on Saturday.

Top-seeded Socastee easily dispatched of visiting Hilton Head Island 52-9 to improve to 22-1 on the season. The second-seeded Sharks scored a 35-29 road victory over Swansea to set up the rematch with the Braves.

Socastee, which scored a 39-28 win over St. James last week to earn the region championship, got pins from Logan Dylan Martin (120), Joe Smolenski (195) and Kyle Burton (220) and won the rest of the matches by decision except for two weight classes.

(170 lbs.) Aydin Imani of Socastee beat Sam Rini of Hilton Head 8-0 (Major Decision).
(182 lbs.) Zach Mor of Socastee beat Martin Duane of Hilton Head 8-6 (Decision).
(195 lbs.) Joe Smolenski of Socastee pinned Devon Chisolm of Hilton Head in 3 minutes and 33 seconds.
(220 lbs.) Kyle Burton of Socastee pinned Jeffery Wilson of Hilton Head in 1 minute and 37 seconds.
