BSC honors 5 Lady Chants; Quolas pitcher of the year

Kiana Quolas was named the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year and is among five Coastal Carolina softball players who were honored by the league as part of its 2013 season awards, announced Wednesday night at the annual banquet on the campus of Winthrop University.

Quolas and third baseman Kory Hayden earned All-Big South first team honors for the second straight year, based on voting by the league’s head coaches. Pitcher Ashley Bagwell was selected All-Big South second team, while outfielder Bri Chiusano and catcher Morgan Noad were named to the inaugural All-Freshman Team. Quolas also represented Coastal on the conference’s All-Academic Team.

The awards ceremony was capped off by the Chants being presented with their 2013 Big South regular season championship trophy.

Quolas was a unanimous pick for Pitcher of the Year and is the first Chanticleer to earn the honor since the conference started giving out the award in 2004. She is also the first Coastal player to earn one of the league’s two most prestigious on-field honors since Meagen Johnson was tabbed Player of the Year in 2006.

The sophomore right-hander went 21-9 during the regular-season with a Big South-best 1.86 ERA. She also led the league in victories, opponents’ batting average (.227) and shutouts (6) ranked second behind Bagwell in strikeouts with 140, while walking just 34 batters in 188.2 innings. Quolas earned the conference’s Pitcher of the Week honor five times, and in league play had a 12-3 record with a 1.46 ERA, one save and nine complete games. She was also nearly flawless defensively, making just one error in 56 chances in the circle for a .982 fielding percentage.

Hayden, the co-Freshman of the Year in 2012, led the Chanticleers in home runs and RBIs for the second straight season, totaling 15 longballs and driving in 41 runs. She also had a team-best .620 slugging percentage, 101 total bases and four sacrifice flies, while tying for third in hits (47) and ranking third in runs (30) and doubles (9). Defensively, Hayden led the conference with 123 assists and had a .946 fielding percentage in 176 chances. She ranked second in the league in sacrifice flies and tied for fourth in home runs.

Bagwell recorded a league-high 143 strikeouts in 125.1 innings for an average of just under eight strikeouts per seven innings. She was second to Quolas among conference pitchers in opponents’ batting average (.239), while posting an 11-8 record and a 3.30 ERA in her junior season.

Chiusano had a team-best 56 hits and 44 runs as the Chants’ leadoff hitter and ranked second in the Big South with 25 stolen bases, without being caught once. The 25 steals were the most for a Coastal player since 1999 and the sixth-most all-time. Chisuano, who was second on the team with a .326 average, also ranked sixth in the conference in runs scored and second among freshmen.

Noad was behind the plate in every inning that the Chanticleers played and finished second on the team with 13 home runs, helping to break the school record for homers in a season. She led all Big South freshmen in homers and ranked sixth overall in the conference. Noad hit four grand slams during the season, finished second on the squad with 36 RBIs and scored 25 runs.

Quolas earned All-Academic honors with a 3.61 GPA as an exercise and sport science major. She was named to Coastal’s Dean’s List each of her first three semesters.

Head coach Kelley Green was runner-up for the conference’s Coach of the Year honor. She collected the majority of the first-place votes with five, while Campbell’s Drew Peterson had the other four and won the award by one overall point.

Coastal now has 43 All-Big South first-team selections and 32 second-team picks in program history.
