BSC Tourney: Lady Chants knocked out in first round

ccuwhoops-2015No. 8 seed UNC Asheville took the lead for good during a 14-0 run which spanned both halves of Tuesday evening’s 2015 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women’s Basketball Championship first round tilt with No. 9 seed Coastal Carolina. Asheville then held off the Chanticleers down the stretch, claiming a 68-54 triumph at The HTC Center.

Asheville freshman guard Khaila Webb set a career high for the second straight game with her team-high 16 points on 7-of-8 from the field. Teammate Tianna Knuckles scored 10 of her 14 points after halftime for the Bulldogs, who improve to 9-21 overall and 3-0 versus Coastal Carolina this season.

Asheville advances to the quarterfinal round, where the Bulldogs will match up with No. 1 seed Liberty, Thursday at noon.

Tournament host Coastal Carolina’s 2014-15 season ends at 12-18 with the Chanticleers’ fourth consecutive setback and second home loss to Asheville in four days.

In a losing effort, Anna Vogt scored a career-high 25 points and set a Big South first-round field goal percentage record (76.9 percent, 10-of-13). First team All-Big South performer AJ Jordan added 14 points and a game-high nine boards in the final contest of her brilliant career.

* No. 6 seed Presbyterian showed why it ranks fifth nationally in scoring defense during Tuesday afternoon’s 2015 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women’s Basketball Championship first round matchup with No. 11 seed Charleston Southern. The Blue Hose held CSU to a season-low point total in a 47-39 victory at The HTC Center.

Presbyterian (16-14), which never trailed, kept an opponent below the 40-point mark for the fourth time this season. Meanwhile, the Blue Hose featured a balanced offensive attack with Janie Miles (12 points), Elizabeth Landers (11 points) and Keyonna Allen (10 points) all reaching double figures.

* No. 7 Gardner-Webb advances to the quarterfinals after topping No. 10 Longwood, 63-55, in first round action of the 2015 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championship.

Gardner-Webb’s defense shut down the Lancers late in the contest as GWU held Longwood without a field goal for a seven and a half minute stretch before Raven Williams drove in for the final layup with five seconds remaining in the contest. The Runnin’ Bulldogs advance to Thursday’s quarterfinal round and will play No. 2 Radford at 6 p.m. inside The HTC Center.
