CAC skirts snow, heats up Snowflake Invite podium

The Coastal Aquatic Club (CAC) dodged a snowy weekend in Rock Hill for the 2017 Rays Snowflake Invite, hosted by the Upper Palmetto YMCA Swim Club. The South Charlotte region was hit with freezing rain on Friday and light snow on Saturday, but the main snow line remained just north and west of the area.

The meet brought together teams from South Carolina (Bluffton, Clemson, Mount Pleasant, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, and Sumter) and North Carolina (Charlotte and Durham). Given the large number of swimmers, there were 3 daily sessions on Saturday and Sunday to complete all competitions. Swimmers could swim 3 or 4 races per day, depending on their age.

Over the 3-day meet, 29 CAC swimmers (of 34 entered, 85% of team) scored at least one TOP TEN finish. Eight swimmers recorded first place finishes, led by Harrison Clinton who won every event he entered (7 in all). And, seven swimmers won multiple events. Here’s a list of TOP FIVE finishes by CAC swimmers:

• Harrison Clinton: 1st in 400 IM; 1st in 50 Free; 1st in 100 Fly; 1st in 200 Breast; 1st in 200 Fly; 1st in 100 Free; and 1st in 100 Breast.

Absent from the above results is Taylor Steele, who was competing in the Speedo Winter Junior National East Meet at the University of Tennessee. Taylor was 17th in the 100 Breast and 34thin the 200 Breast (each event had approximately 100 swimmers entered). She set personal-best times in both races. And, she qualified for the U.S. Open Swimming Championship later this summer.

Next weekend, CAC will host its annual Reindeer Games, a less-serious intra-squad meet full of relays and non-traditional swim races designed to promote fellowship and club unity. In larger swim clubs, swimmers tend to practice with their own age groups. Such ‘fun meets’ get all team members and their families together for one enjoyable event.
