CAC swimmers win medals at Palmetto Championship

cac-palmsThe 2014 Lowcountry Palmetto Championship Swim Meet was held this weekend at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic Center.

The meet was open to all youth swimmers who did not qualify for the multi-state sectional meets for their individual events (sectional qualifying times are faster than state championship qualifying times).  These sectional qualifiers have been in action in recent weeks in Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA.

Coastal Aquatic Club (CAC) was represented by 43 swimmers in the Lowcountry Palmetto Championship meet.  The format for the meet varied based upon a swimmer’s age.  Swimmers age 10-and-under used the timed-finals format.  That is, swimmers posted a single time per event and those times were used to determine top finishers in that event.  Older swimmers (ages 11 and up) had a preliminary qualifying session in the morning and a Finals session in the event.
Particularly noteworthy performances for the weekend include:

• Mason Bryan won both the 200 Fly and 200 Free.  Mason also earned 2 new sectional cuts for these events.  His time of 1:46.85 is a new CAC team record.
• Casey Mitchell won 6 events (100 Breast, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 200 Free, 500 Free, 100 Back), was second 200 IM and third in the 50 Free.
•  Kennedy Drew won 2 events (200 Fly, 50 Free) in addition a second place in 100 Free and 3 third-place finishes (100 Breast, 200 Back, 200 Free).
• Tyler Eldred won 2 events (100 Breast, 100 Fly), a pair of second-place finishes (200 Breast, 50 Free), and third in the 100 Free.
• Ana Wolff won the 100 Free while finishing second in both the 200 IM and 100 Back.
• Kater Wolff was first in the 100 Back and second in the 50 Free.
• Sophia McKanna won first-place in the 100 back.  In doing so, she recorded a new sectional-qualifying time for the event.

CAC swimmers recorded personal best times in 143 of 233 events entered (61% of their races).  Nine swimmers recorded a total of 12 new state qualifying times (Richie Drew (200 IM); Grice Fortenberry (100 Breast, 50 Free, 100 Free); Lizzy Gatley (100 Back); Julia Marinoff (50 Free); Sophia McKanna (200 Free, 100 IM); Casey Mitchell (400 IM); April Ratley (100 Breast); Ana Wolff (100 Back); and Kater Wolff (100 Back).
