CAC swimmers strike gold in the cold at Early Bird meet

cac-SMRT Invitational Apr2016The Southern Marlins Racing Team (SMRT) of Charleston hosted the 2016 SMRT Early Bird Invitational this past weekend at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Outdoor Pool in Charleston despite the chilly and windy conditions.

Six teams from across the Lowcountry brought a total of 380 swimmers to Charleston for the 2-day event.   This meet marked the start of the Long Course season as swimmers will now compete in 50-meter (Olympic) pools at both indoor and outdoor facilities with the State Championship Meet to be held in Columbia at the end of July.

CAC was represented by 28 swimmers in the SMRT Early Bird Invitational.  In total, 11 CAC swimmers combined for 33 top eight finishes.  We will highlight the top as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Pool in an 8-lane pool:

• Sean King: 1st in 100 Back; 1st in 100 Fly; 3rd in 50 Free; and 8th in 200 IM.
• Casey Mitchell:  2nd in 100 Back; 5th in 200 Back; 7th in 200 Free; and 8th in 400 Free.
• Jenn Paul:  3rd in 100 Fly; 3rd in 400 Free; 4th in 100 Back; 4th in 200 Back; 4th in 100 Free; 5th in 200 Free; 5th in 200 Fly; and 8th in 200 IM.
• John Grey Crosby: 3rd in 50 Free; 4th in 100 Back.
• Lex Whalen:  4th in 100 Back; 4th in 200 IM; and 5th in 50 Free.
• Saman Vitherana: 5th in 100 Breast; 7th in 200 Free, and 8th in 50 Free.
• Michael Paglio:  5th in 200 Back; 8th in 100 Back.
• Peyton Widner:  6th in 50 Fly; 8th in 50 Back; and 8th in 100 Back.
• Tom Young:  6th in 50 Free.
• Ryan Eldred:  7th in 50 Free; 8th in 100 Fly.
• Jensen Helgerson:  8th in 200 Breast.

CAC was represented by the following swimmers in the SMRT Early Bird Invitational meet: Mason Alford, Peyton Arp, Adelyn Barbour, Raven Bunton, Kennedy Cox, John Grey Crosby, Alexandra Damonte, Laura Damonte, Ryan Eldred, Lucas Harrelson, Jensen Helgerson, Dan Hennington, Sean King, Casey Mitchell, Sophia Murphy, Mia Paglio, Michael Paglio, Maddi Pannell, Jenn Paul, Anna Satterfield,  Chloe Stampfle, Kyran Vitharana, Saman Vitharana, Lex Whalen, Peyton Widner, Morgan Young, Tom Young, and Davy Zevgolis.

Next weekend, 7 CAC swimmers will be recognized as “All-State” Recipients at a banquet hosted by South Carolina Swimming, including:  Mason Bryan, John Grey Crosby, Sean King, Olivia McGonigal, Casey Mitchell, Kater Wolff, and Liam Zevgolis.

CAC will be providing a Summer Swim League team beginning in June and running through July 23.  Swim meets will be held on Thursday evenings at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center in Myrtle Beach.   Interested families are invited to visit the team’s website at: http://www.swimcoastal.com.
