Cal scores late goal to sink Coastal’s trip to Sweet 16

A goal by California’s Alec Sundly in the 65th minute proved to be the only score of the match as the fourth-seeded Golden Bears defeated Coastal Carolina 1-nil in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.

Coastal Carolina, which was making its second consecutive Third Round appearance, ends the season with a 19-5-0 mark. Cal improved to 14-4-2 and will host fifth-seeded Maryland in the Tournament’s Quarterfinal Round.

Despite outshooting the Golden Bears 17-12, Coastal was unable to find a goal over the 90 minutes of play. Coastal’s Devin Cook turned in a career day with nine saves. Cal was led offensively by Sundly’s three shots, including two on frame, while Pedro Ribeiro led the Coastal attack with three shot attempts…

Sundly scored the eventual game-winner in the 65th minute to break the scoreless tie. Moments after CCU’s Sergio Camargo challenged the Cal keeper with a shot; the Golden Bears countered down the right flank and used a quick restart after a foul to free Omid Jalali on the right side of the box. Jalali’s shot attempt was initially saved by Cook, but not controlled. Sundly ran onto the ball near the left post and chipped it high into the net for his 11th goal of the season.

The sides spent the first 15 minutes of the match feeling each other out. In the 17th minute Coastal’s Jakub Stourac found himself behind the Golden Bear defense in the box. The sophomore attempted a shot on frame, but Cal’s Alex Mangels was there to make the first save of the game. The opportunity was created by a pass from Ribeiro after a run of buildup down the left flank.

Cal found its first scoring chance of the game in the 22nd minute on a well-executed set piece following a Coastal foul. However, Coastal’s Cook was there to make a diving save on Steve Brinbaum’s header. Moments later, Cook answered the call again with another spectacular save on a shot by Sundly.

Coastal cleared the ensuing corner and mounted a dangerous counter attack that was thwarted by a Cal foul that brought out the match’s first yellow card. Ribeiro lined up the free kick from 24-yards out and hit a blast that was saved over the crossbar by Mangels. The Chants were unable to get a shot on goal off the ensuing corner.

Each team produced an additional scoring chance in the late stages of the half, but both keepers kept the ball out of the back of the net to send the game into the half deadlocked 0-0.

Ribeiro was afforded another shot at the top of the box during the run of play 10 minutes into the second half, but his one-timer went just wide of the near post. Five minutes later, Cal’s Connor Hallisey had a similar opportunity, but his shot was easily smothered by Cook.

In the 74th minute Sergio Camargo had a great look at the goal, but his dipping shot toward the near post was met by a great diving save by Cal’s Mangels.

Cook, who set the Coastal Carolina and Big South record with 12 shutouts this season, came away big again in the 77th minute. He faced Cal’s Christian Thierjung 1v1 and beat the Golden Bear’s shot to the near post to record his ninth save of the contest.

Coastal pressed forward in search of the game-tying goal over the final minutes of the match, but the Cal defensive turned away each Chanticleer threat.

The game also marked the conclusion of the collegiate careers of Chanticleer seniors Ribeiro, Justin Portillo and Matt Risher. The class advanced to the NCAA Tournament each season, compiling a 5-4-0 mark in the national tournament.
