Newton, Rivera win awards on eve of Super Bowl 50

camJust as he has done all season on the field, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton also took charge of the team during a photo op on the day before Super Bowl 50. And just as he has done all season in the endzone, Newton wasn’t shy about celebrating.

Following the traditional team picture, he had the Panthers pose doing some of his signature moves, including the “dab”, and he even had the players show their ring fingers in another shot. It’s safe to say the Panthers are keeping it loose before they battle the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium on Super Bowl Sunday – the biggest stage in sports.

“Big games don’t seem to bother him,” Rivera said of his star quarterback. “He seems to be who he is. He’s kept his personality. That’s been one of the messages I’ve had with these guys. Keep your personality, keep your energy level up and stay focused.”

The Panthers also got some good news on the injury front. Defensive end Jared Allen (foot), linebacker Thomas Davis (forearm) and Coastal Carolina product/fullback Mike Tolbert (knee) were all listed as probable on the injury report. The Panthers enter the Super Bowl with all players available.

“I just feel really good about it,” he said. “I think we have a great group of young men who have really earned this opportunity and, hopefully, we’ll understand what it means and take advantage of it.”

Newton was awarded NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year honors, and Rivera made it a clean sweep for the Panthers by winning NFL Coach of the Year on Saturday night at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Cecil Newton Sr., Cam’s father, accepted the awards of his son’s behalf.
