Camargo scores two goals to lift Chants past Wolfpack

ccusoc-carmargocloseA first-half goal by freshman Tommy Gudmundsson and two Sergio Camargo scores in the opening 3:04 of the second half spurred No. 25 Coastal Carolina to a 3-1 victory over NC State at the Wolfpack’s Dial Soccer Field on Tuesday evening.

The multi-goal game was Camargo’s first since scoring a pair against Winthrop in last season’s quarterfinal round of the Big South tournament. Camargo, who received an assist on both goals from Bryce Follensbee, now leads Coastal with four counters on the campaign.

The win was Coastal’s (6-3-0, 1-0-0 Big South) first against NC State (3-4-2, 0-2-1 ACC) in four tries since the all-time series began during the 1981 season. The win also moved the Chants to 2-1 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents since the start of the 2013 season.

After withstanding a quick start by the Wolfpack’s direct attack, the Chanticleers settled in and gained their composure. After making a personnel move along the backline, Coastal took control of the possession battle and started to apply pressure on the NC State backline and goalkeeper.

The Chants’ pressure paid off at the 15:58 mark as Tommy Gudmundsson’s header found the back of the net. A quick corner set the play up, leaving Ricky Garbanzo free to serve a ball into the six-yard box. Gudmundsson elevated above the Wolfpack defense and headed the ball home for his first score of the season.

Following the goal, Coastal continued to dictate the pace of play through the remainder of the first half. The Chants recorded six shot attempts during the frame and earned five corner kicks.

It took the Chanticleers a mere 22 seconds into the second half to add a second goal. Camargo received a pass from Follensbee toward the left side of the box. Camargo took a touch before launching a left-footed blast into the far right corner of the net. The goal marked Camargo’s third of the season, while the assist was Follensbee’s first.

The Follensbee and Camargo combination worked to perfection again in the 49th minute of play. Follensbee beat his defender to the right corner and sent a cross along the ground into the foot of Camargo on the right side of the box. The Colombian took a quick touch to beat his primary defender before placing his one-timer into the far side netting.

The Wolfpack created what looked to be a sure scoring opportunity in the 52nd minute; however, Travis Wannemuehler’s shot on an empty net made contact with the left post and rolled harmlessly across the goal mouth.

NC State got a goal back in the 59th minute off the foot of Wannemuehler, cutting Coastal’s lead to 3-1. NC State used a combination play by Holden Fender and Nick Surkamp up the left side of the field that left a rolling ball through the box for Wannemuehler to tap into the net.

The Uchenna Uzo and Shawn McLaws-anchored Chanticleer backline withstood numerous Wolfpack attacks over the final half hour of play, turning away several shots in and near the 18-yard box to secure the Chants’ third straight victory.

Coastal’s Devin Cook-Perales turned in season-high tying eight-save performance to earn the win and move his record to 5-3-0 on the season.

Coastal returns to action Saturday for a conference match at Campbell. Kickoff at the Fighting Camels’ Eakes Athletics Complex is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Coastal leads the all-time series against Campbell by a 13-10-1 count. The Chanticleers have won five straight against their conference brethren, including a 5-2 victory last season.
