CAMB rallies from 16-point deficit to down Socastee

After scoring its landmark 100th victory in its last game, Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach scored an even bigger one for their 101st by knocking off Socastee in overtime on the road Tuesday night.

CAMB has been waiting to score a big victory over a top local public school since its inception six years ago, and after three quarters it appeared the Saints (8-0) were going to have to keep waiting.

Trailing 40-24 entering the fourth quarter, CAMB outscored the Braves (0-3) 20-4 in the final frame to force overtime and then shot 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the extra period for a 51-48 victory.

It was the fourth overall win over a public school for the Saints but by far the biggest.

“It was an unbelievable comeback victory for our 101st,” said CAMB coach Darren Gore. “We beat (Class A) Carvers Bay two years ago and beat (2A) Green Sea Floyds twice last year, but to beat 3A program like socastee … it’s a huge stepping stone for our program.”

CAMB freshman Bernard Jones and senior Kendall Henry led the Saints (8-0) to the 19-point turnaround. Senior Max Smith added 10 points, seven boards and some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.

But with leading scorer Henry under the weather, it was Jones who carried the load. He scored a game-high 22 points with 13 boards and five steals, while Henry was held eight points, but made up for it with 16 rebounds and seven steals.

“Kendall was really sick, he threw up in the locker room a couple of times, but he battled through it to get 16 rebounds and seven steals,” Gore said. “But Bernard was amazing. He drove to the basket and picked up some fouls and also crashed the boards for us. It was a great team win.”

Socastee (0-3), which is starting three sophomores this season, was unable to maintain the lead it built and held for most of the game. Will Caswell led the Braves with 17 points.
