CAMB rallies from losers’ bracket to reach state final

Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach battled its way out of the losers’ bracket Saturday to reach the finals of the SCISA Class A volleyball tournament in Sumter.

After winning Friday’s first-round game against Anderson Christian 2-0, the top-seeded Lady Saints (17-2) suffered their first loss of the season to a SCISA opponent, Cathedral Academy, in Saturday’s heart-breaking 2-1 defeat, 27-25, 22-25, and 20-25.

That forced CAMB to rally from the losers’ bracket, beating James Island Christian 2-0 (25-18, 25-11) to set up a showdown with undefeated Coastal Christian Prep. The Lady Saints needed to win two straight from the Lady Cougars to advance, and it didn’t look good at first.

The Lady Saints trailed 5-19 in the first set before freshman Caroline Gore got hot from the back stripe, serving eight straight points to close the deficit. Rebekah Bowers and Claudia Markley kept the rally goingĀ  to score a 25-23 victory to cap a two-set sweep.

CAMB suffered a hard-fought 24-26 to open the final match but battled back to win 25-23 and 25-21 to cap a long but successful day. The Lady Saints face Cathedral Academy at 6 p.m. Monday at Wilson Hall in Sumter in a rematch for the school’s first SCISA-A state title in volleyball.
