Cameron scores 17 to lead CCU to win over Longwood

Diagne_Badou5vs.LibertyJosh Cameron scored a game-high 17 points to lead four Coastal Carolina players in double figures as the Chanticleers coasted to a 67-58 victory over Longwood in Big South men’s basketball action at The HTC Center Saturday. The Chanticleers improved to 14-10 overall and 7-3 in the conference with their ninth win in the last 12 games. Longwood dropped to 7-18, 2-8.

Cameron registered all of his points by early in the second half and before Badou Diagne, Elijah Wilson and Warren Gillis took on scoring roles. Diagne finished with 16 points, including 10 of those in the second half. Wilson had 5 of his 14 points in the second period. And Gillis had all of his 11 points after the break.

Coastal built a comfortable early lead and led by at least 9 points from the midway mark of the first half until Longwood reserve Jeylani Dublin scored on a follow-up to make the score, 63-56 with a minute left in the game. Dublin got all 11 of his points in the second half and was one of three double-figure scorers for the Lancers, who now have lost 11 of their last 13 games. Tristan Carey led Longwood with 16 points, but hit only 4-15 from the field.

Coastal never trailed after taking an 8-5 lead just 6 minutes into the game, and Cameron had 11 of his points in the first half as Coastal built a 33-20 advantage at the half. Cameron hit for nine straight CCU points early in the game as the Chanticleers pulled in front 17-7. Wilson later scored six points in an 11-2 run that lifted Coastal to a 33-16 lead with a minute left in the first period.

Coastal hit on 7-19 three-pointers and out-rebounded the Lancers, 45-33. El Hadji Ndieguene led the way with 10 rebounds while Diagne had 8. Diagne also made his mark with four thundering dunks in the second half.

Coastal returns to action Wednesday at high-scoring VMI, which leads the North Division of the Big South.
