Carmargo’s goals lead CCU to road win over Blazers

ccusoc-uabSergio Camargo notched his third career multi-goal game in leading fifth-ranked Coastal Carolina to a 3-1 victory Monday evening over UAB at the Blazer’s West Campus Field.

Camargo gave Coastal (5-0-1) a 2-nil lead at the intermission as he scored his first multi-goal game since Sept. 30 of last season at NC State. In the seventh minute Camargo turned a UAB (3-5-0) error deep in the Blazers’ end into a breakaway and a finish inside the left post. Then in the 39th minute the junior scored of a rebound of a Sindri Kristinsson shot from near the top of the 18-yard box.

Coastal controlled the possession throughout the first half as the black and teal-clad Chants totaled six shots, including three on goal, and five corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of play.

UAB threatened often in the opening 15 minutes of the second stanza, registering four corners and three shots. However, Coastal’s Fernando Pina and the backline, which includes co-Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Tommy Gudmundsson, turned away each Blazer attack.

Freddy Ruiz cut Coastal’s lead to 2-1 in the 68th minute as he converted a penalty kick following a Chanticleer foul in the box.

Six minutes later Gutierrez re-established Coastal’s two-goal lead with his second counter of the season. The Spaniard tracked down a loose ball on a rebound 27-yards from goal and lofted a seeing-eye shot into the right upper 90. The goal closed the derby’s scoring with the Chants holding the all-important 3-1 lead on the scoreboard.

Coastal’s Pina was credited with six saves as he improved his record to 5-0-1, while UAB’s Joe Kuzminsky (3-5-0) made two saves in the losing effort.

Coastal, which is 40-4-2 in its last 46 league contests, returns home Fri., Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. for its Big South Conference season opener against Gardner-Webb. The match, as always, will be streamed live on the Big South Network and admission is free for both CCU students and the general public.
