Carolina Forest dominates Darlington in strong debut

cffoot-15handoffSecond-year Carolina Forest coach Marc Morris has been preaching patience and hard work to his struggling Panthers. On Friday night, those virtues paid off in spades for the Carolina Forest football program.

The Panthers opened the 2015 season on a winning note and in impresive fashion, defeating host Darlington 31-6 after losing to the Falcons by three touchdowns in last year’s debut.

Quarterback Matt Beale, stepping in for departed three-year starter Will Brunson, led the Panthers’ new balanced attack with three touchdown passes and the much-maligned defense held Darlington scoreless until the meaningless fourth quarter to get the season started on a positive foot.

The Panthers’ new ball-control attack came out firing on all cylinders, taking the opening possession down field for a 1-yard touchdown run by Dyverse Simmons. The rest of the big plays came through the air, with Beale connecting with Victory Woods on a pair of TD passes and hooking up with Jason Craft on a 52-yarder that made it 28-0 at halftime.

Simmons helped lead a balanced offense with 169 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Jimmie Wilson had an interception and Malik Culbreath recovered a fumble.

The Panthers found themselves in the unusual position of calling off the dogs and running out the clock in the second half. Freddie Kane booted a 31-yard field goal for their only points of the second half, but the point had already been made – the Panthers are a team to contend with this season.
