Carolina Forest’s comeback submerged by Green Wave

cffoot-21The final score might not reflect it, but Carolina Forest made a bold statement despite a first-round playoff exit in a 45-35 loss to Summerville on Friday night.

The Panthers (6-5) erased an early 20-point deficit to take the lead in the final minutes before the host Green Wave came up with a pair of big plays. Andre Banks caught a go-ahead touchdown pass from Jonathan Bennett in the final minute. Summerville’s Allen Fields scooped and scored on a sack and forced fumble on Carolina Forest quarterback Matt Beale, who played despite dealing with flu-like symptoms, in the final seconds to end the Panthers’ comeback bid.

Summerville appeared headed to an easy win in building a 27-7 advantage early, but Carolina Forest running back Anthony McAfee broke loose for a pair TDs to cut the halftime deficit to 27-21. He scored his third TD on a 44-yard burst to open the second half, and the Panthers’ defense made the lead hold up until late in the fourth quarter.

Summerville kicker Chandler Corson booted a 45-yard field goal with just under 5 minutes left to reclaim the lead at 30-28, but McAfee returned the ensuing kickoff deep into Green Wave territory. Beale connected with Derrick Alston from 7 yards out for a 35-30 lead before Summerville came through with the big plays in the clutch, scoring two TDs in the final 90 seconds.

The Panthers suffered their fourth straight defeat to end a season that began with a promising 6-1 start.
