Casey at the bat: Schroeder hits 3 HRs to propel Chants

ccubase-casey schroeder vs illinois (2)Casey Schroeder hit three home runs and drove in six to lead Coastal Carolina (9-4) to a back-and-forth, 17-9 victory versus Akron (5-5) Friday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium as part of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.

Schroeder, a junior catcher, hit two home runs right handed and one from the left side of the plate. He is the third Chanticleer to hit three home runs in a single game, joining David Anderson (vs. High Point 2008) and David Sappelt (vs. Radford 2010). After hitting one home run Wednesday at The Citadel, six of Schroeder’s 10 hits this season have been round trippers. In just 13 games, his six home runs are more than CCU’s team leader in the category from last season (Connor Owings hit four home runs in 57 games) and is one shy of the team-best seven home runs hit by Jacob May in 2013.

Also providing a big punch offensively for Coastal were G.K. Young and David Parrett. Young was 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Parrett contributed four RBI on his two hits. Zach Remillard added two hits and two RBI.

The Zips took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Daulton Mosbarger and Matt Rembielak had back-to-back singles to start the game. With one out, Kris Simonton reached on a fielder’s choice. An error on the play allowed Mosbarger score from second. Simonton stole second and scored on an RBI single by Dom Iero.

Coastal Carolina answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Connor Owings drew a leadoff walk and Michael Paez followed with a bunt single. An error on the play allowed Owings to take third and he later scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Young hit a two-run home run to right center field, plating Paez in the process, for his second round tripper of the year and a 3-2 lead.

Casey Schroeder hit a solo home run in the second, his fourth of the season and second in as many games, to give CCU a 4-2 advantage.

The Chants pushed their lead to six with four runs in the third inning. Young hit an RBI double and David Parrett Schroeder followed with a two-run double. Schroeder capped the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Akron sent 11 men to the plate and rallied to score six runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 8-8. James Meeker and Matt LaRocca had back-to-back doubles. After walks to Mosbarger and Rembielak, Joey Havrilak kept the inning alive by reaching on a three-base error. Simonton followed with an RBI single and Iero singled to put runners on the corner. Gerrad Rohan delivered a two-run double to tie the game.

The Zips kept the pressure on in the sixth. Mosbarger singled, took second on a ground out and scored on a single by Havrilak for a 9-8 lead.

However, Schroeder tied the game with a leadoff home run to left field and CCU went on to score five more to take a 14-9 lead. Anthony Marks singled prior to Akron walking three straight Chants to force in a run. Remillard then delivered a two-run single and Parrett came through with a two-run double.

Coastal put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth inning. Remillard doubled, Parrett was hit by a pitch and Schroeder cleared the bases with a three-run shot down the right field line.

Bobby Holmes (1-0) earned his first collegiate win. The freshman pitched three innings in relief, allowing two hits and one run with a strikeout. Akron starter John Valek III (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing 11 runs in 5.1 innings.

Coastal will host Michigan Saturday at 3 pm. The Wolverines will face Toledo at 10 am prior to playing the Chants.
