CBHI Roundup: Edgewater, Miami make all-Florida final

cbhi-edgewaterEdgewater (Orlando, FL) defeated Dreher (Columbia, SC) 57-44 to set up an all-Florida Championship game at the 2013 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.

Edgewater (12-3) joins Miami Senior (14-0) in the title contest as the Stingarees defeated Orangeburg (SC)-Wilkinson 44-29 in the first semifinal.

Miami Senior is making its fifth appearance in Myrtle Beach as a participant in the CBHI, while Edgewater is making its second appearance.  Both programs will be playing in the championship game for the first time.

Edgewater’s pressure defense forced Dreher (7-1) into 28 turnovers.  The Eagles turned those miscues into 26 points.

* Miami (FL) Senior defeated Orangeburg (SC)-Wilkinson 44-29 to advance to the Championship game of the 2013 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.  The Stingarees (14-0) advance to the title game for the first time in their five trips to Myrtle Beach for the CBHI.

Miami Senior grabbed a double-digit lead late in the first half and never lost the large lead, building the margin to as many as 18 in the second half.

Beatrice Mompremier led Miami Senior with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Orangeburg-Wilkinson (7-1) was paced by Kierra Mitchell’s 11 points.

* A’ja Wilson, the top rated girl’s basketball player in the nation as ranked by ESPN, tallied 41 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead Heathwood Hall (Columbia, SC) to a 61-54 victory over Greenwood (SC).  Wilson now has 111 points in three games, just three short of the four-game tournament record held by held by Maddy Brown of Honeoye Falls (NY) in 2004.

The 111 points leaves her three short of former University of North Carolina star and current WNBA player Ivory Latta’s three-game total back in 2002.

The game saw Greenwood (6-2) hold a 54-51 lead with 1:45 remaining on the clock and it looked like the Eagles would be moving on to the fifth place contest.  The Highlanders had another plan though as they scored the game’s final 10 points for the victory.

* St. Joseph Central (Huntington, WV) overcame an early first-half deficit of 12 points to score a 74-58 win over Northwood (North Charleston, SC) and advance to the fifth-place game.

Northwood (7-3) built a 30-18 lead with 6:05 remaining in the opening half before the Fighting Irish stormed back with a 19-6 run to close the half.

* William Fleming (Roanoke, VA) led by as many as 17 points in the second half before having to hold off Scott County (Georgetown, KY) for a 73-70 victory.  With the win, the Colonels (5-2) advance to the consolation bracket’s championship game.
