CBHI Roundup: Miami wins title; Wilson nets record 56

cbhi-heathwoodMiami (FL) Senior defeated Edgewater (Orlando, FL) 52-50 to capture the 2013 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.  The title comes in the program’s fifth trip to the CBHI.

Beatrice Mompremier posted a double-double to lead Miami Senior (15-0) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Most Valuable Player Amanda Mendoze added 14 points for the Stingarees.  Edgewater (12-4) was paced by Nyala Shuler’s 17 points.

* In a tight contest of South Carolina Class AAA programs, Orangeburg-Wilkinson defeated Dreher 50-46 to capture third place in the 2013 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.

Orangeburg-Wilkinson (8-1) connected on just 27.6 percent of its shots from the field (16-58) but committed just seven turnovers in the win.  Meanwhile, the Bruins forced Dreher (7-2) into 20 turnovers and turned them into 23 points.

Dejoria Howard led Orangeburg-Wilkinson with 16 points, while Kaydra Duckett and Jhileiya Dunlap paced Dreher with 15 points each.

* Heathwood Hall’s A’ja Wilson made sure that she left her mark on the record book of the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational, even though it came in a losing effort.  St. Joseph (Huntington, WV) spoiled Wilson’s party with an 85-82 victory to take home the fifth place trophy.

Wilson, ranked by ESPN as the #1 player in the nation, scored 56 points to break Ivory Latta’s record of 53.  Latta, now an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina and member of the WNBA’s Washington Mystic, set the mark while playing for York (SC) High School in the 2002 tournament.  Wilson also set four-game tournament records with 167 points and 83 rebounds.

While Wilson’s time on the floor was obviously fruitful, it was her time off of the floor that may have cost Heathwood Hall the game.  The Highlanders held a commanding 60-39 lead with 8:05 to play when an alarm clock went off in the heads of the St. Joseph players and they came storming back.  In less than three minutes, St. Joseph closed the gap to just one at 63-62 with 5:40 on the clock with an amazing 23-3 run.

Heathwood Hall continued to hold a small lead when Wilson was fouled with 3:41 on the clock.  She went to the ground, hitting the back of her head, and was taken out for the first time all day.  Cami Phillips entered the game and stepped to the free throw line and hit one of two free throws to give the Highlanders a 70-68 lead.  Wilson would return at the 1:55 mark but left with 1:12 on the clock for good.

* Seton-LaSalle (Pittsburgh, PA) captured the 2013 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational Consolation Bracket Championship with a 69-41 victory over William Fleming (Roanoke, VA).

Seton-LaSalle (5-3) used a high pressure defense to force 27 Colonels’ turnovers.  The Rebels turned those miscues into 34 points off turnovers and outscored William Fleming (4-3) 14-0 on fastbreak points.  Seton-LaSalle scored 18 of the game’s first 20 points and never never looked back.

University of Pittsburgh signee Yacine Diop led Seton-LaSalle with 16 points.  Sophomore point guard Shaunay Edmonds added 13 points, four assists and six steals.

William-Fleming was paced with 12 points by Courtney Martin.

* Miami and Edgewater will meet in an all-Florida final.
