CBHI: Unbeaten Seahawks make first trip to semifinals

mbghoops-25cbhiMyrtle Beach remained undefeated on the season at 8-0 and advanced to its first semifinal round in 18 years of the Crescom Bank Holiday Invitational with a 51-46 victory over Lake Highland Prep (7-3; Orlando, FL) on Tuesday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Trailing 21-20 with 1:24 remaining in the opening half, Myrtle Beach scored the final four points to take a 24-21 advantage into the locker room.  The Lady Seahawks continued the run into the second half, scoring the first five points to move the run to a 9-0 stretch and take a 29-21 lead with 14:08 to play.

Lake Highland then went on a run of its own as the Highlanders’ Jiselle Havas connected on a pair of 3-point baskets to close the gap to 29-27 with 12:44 on the clock.  The teams continued to trade baskets and Lake Highland finally grabbed a 46-45 lead with 2:21 on the clock on a layup by Havas.  Unfortunately for the Highlanders, that would be their last points as they missed their final four shots from the field and committed two turnovers.  Myrtle Beach sealed the victory by connecting on 6-of-11 free throws in the final two minutes.

Kiana Adderton led a balanced Myrtle Beach attack with 12 points. Sumpter and Kira Bell scored 11 points each while Jalah Horton added 10 points for the Seahawks.  Lake Highland Prep was paced by Havas’ 11 points.

Other Tuesday games included:

GAME #13 (Quarterfinal #1): Monacan (VA) def. Norcross (GA), 58-57

After surrendering a 13-point halftime lead, Monacan (6-0; Chesterfield County, VA) relied on its top player for the most important two points of the contest.  With four seconds remaining and trailing by one, the nation’s top player and University of Connecticut signee Megan Walker connected on a pair of free throws to give the Chiefs the victory and advance to the semifinal round to face the winner of the Lake Highland (FL)-Myrtle Beach (SC) match-up.

After seeing the lead change sides of the scoreboard five times and four lead changes in the opening six minutes, Monacan slowly built its lead and closed the first half with eight unanswered points to take a 41-28 advantage into the locker room.

Norcross (12-1; Norcross, GA) opened the second half on fire, scoring the first 19 points to take a 47-41 lead on Vanessa Blagmon’s jumper in the lane with 11:11 on the clock.  Norcross continued to hold the advantage until the 2:04 mark when Alex Parson connected on a long 3-pointer to give Monacan a 56-55 lead.  Blagmon then connected on a jumper from the baseline to regain a 57-56 advantage for Norcross.  Following a timeout, Walker took the inbounds pass from under the basket and was fouled by Norcross’ Taylor Mason.  After Walker connected on the pair from the charity stripe, Norcross’ Mason drove the length of the court but her shot from just outside of the lane hit the rim and bounced away to secure the Monacan victory.

Walker led Monacan with 22 points, while Parson added 11 points and six assists for the Chiefs.  Blagmon, a signee with the University of South Florida, paced Norcross with game highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds.

GAME #15 (Quarterfinal #3): Winder-Barrow (GA) def. Wesleyan (GA), 65-60

Following a 26-26 tie at halftime, Winder-Barrow (7-3; Winder, GA) posted a come-from-behind 65-60 victory over Wesleyan (9-1; Norcross, GA) to advance to the semifinal round.

Wesleyan opened the largest lead of the game at 39-31 with 12:39 to play in the second half on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Mikayla Coombs.  Winder-Barrow responded by scoring nine unanswered points to recapture the lead 40-39 with 10:30 to play.  During the run, Latrice Perkins tallied seven points.  The teams traded the lead one more time before Winder-Barrow took the lead for good at 52-49 on Chellia Watson’s long-range three.

Watson’s bomb was the start of a 7-0 run to give the Bulldogs a 56-49 cushion with 4:32 to play.  The teams again traded baskets and Welseyan cut the lead to 63-60 on an Amaya Register layup with just 19 seconds on the clock.  Following a turnover by Lexi Maddox and a pair of timeouts, Wesleyan’s Avyonce Carter missed a wide open 3-point attempt that would have tied the game.  Maddox connected on a pair of free throws to notch the final score with just two seconds remaining.

Winder-Barrow was paced by Olivia Nelson-Ododa’s game-high 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field.  Perkins added 14 points for the Bulldogs while Maddox added 11 points.  Wesleyan was led by Coombs, a signee with the University of Connecticut.  She posted a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

GAME #16 (Quarterfinal #4): South Shore (NY) def. Ferguson (FL), 49-31

The final quarterfinal was a runaway victory for South Shore (5-1; Miami, FL) as the Vikings never trailed in defeating Ferguson (10-3; Miami, FL) 49-31.  Tsahai Corbie’s 13 points led South Shore while teammate Selena Philoxy posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Ferguson Senior was led by Natalia Pineda’s 13 points, six rebounds and five steals.
