Coastal adds four transfers, three freshmen to ’14 class

ccufoot-aikenCoastal Carolina head football coach Joe Moglia announced seven additions – including four transfers – to the 2014 recruiting class, bringing the season total to 30.

The list of transfers includes former Georgetown University quarterback Aaron Aiken, former Georgia Tech offensive lineman Morgan Bailey, former Western Michigan defensive tackle Jabarai Bothwell and former South Carolina linebacker Kyle Fleetwood.

The group is rounded out by defensive back Keon Brown (Oldsmar, Fla./East Lake HS), linebacker Devontaye Edwards (Sumter, S.C./Sumter HS) and defensive lineman Tarrol Stafford  (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse comprehensive HS).

Profiles of the seven newcomers are listed below:

Aaron Aiken

QB, 6-5, 235, RSr.

Morristown, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School (Georgetown University)

Played for current CCU offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude at Georgetown … Graduated from Georgetown in the spring of 2014 and has one year of eligibility remaining at Coastal Carolina.

2013 (Jr.): Made the move to receiver … Played in nine games and caught three passes for 18 yards … Selected to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

2012 (So.): Appeared in seven games, starting four at quarterback … Completed 52-of-110 passes for 501 yards … Came on after during first series in season-opener at Davidson and passed for 128 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 109 yards on 21 carries … Completed 18-of-38 passes for 146 yards in win over Wagner … Rushed for 72 yards and passed for 94 versus Yale … Completed 8-of-9 passes for 68 yards at Princeton … Selected to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

2011 (RFr.): Appeared in four games at quarterback … Rushed once for five yards at Marist … Also saw action against Wagner, Colgate and Lehigh … A Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection.

2010 (Fr.):  Redshirted  … A Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection.

HIGH SCHOOL: Played quarterback at The Lawrenceville School and Morristown High School … Named second team All-New Jersey Prep as a senior and was an honorable mention All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League … In 14 games at Lawrenceville, threw for 2,000 yards and ran for 1,100 while scoring 18 touchdowns … Also played basketball and ran track.

Morgan Bailey

OL, 6-4, 295, RSr.

Loganville, Ga. / Loganville HS (Georgia Tech)

Received his degree from Georgia Tech in May 2014 in business management … Will have one year of eligibility at Coastal Carolina.

2013 (Jr.): Injured most of the season …  Played in three games (Duke, Virginia Tech and Miami).

2012 (So.): Played in 10 games and started seven times …  Missed the first four games of the season with an injury …  Started the final seven games at right tackle …  Helped Tech lead the ACC and rank fourth nationally in rushing offense.

2011 (RFr.): Overcame injuries to play in three games (Western Carolina, Georgia and Utah).

2010 (Fr.): Redshirted.

HIGH SCHOOL: Rated the 71st-best prospect in the state of Georgia (Rivals.com) …  Rated the 68th-best prospect in Georgia (SuperPrep.com) …  Rated 32nd on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Fab 50 list … Earned All-State in 2009 …   Tabbed all-region in 2008 and 2009 … Named a scholar-athlete in 2008 and 2009 … Played in the North-South USA All-Star Game …  Led football team to regional championship in 2008.

Jabarai Bothwell

Spent two seasons at Western Michigan, redshirting one year, and will have three years of eligibility at Coastal.

2013 (RFr.): Appeared in nine games with three total tackles  …  Registered quarterback hurry versus Nicholls State … Made his collegiate debut at Michigan State … Recovered fumble at Iowa.

2012 (Fr.):  Redshirted, serving on the defensive scout team.

HIGH SCHOOL: Rated the 30th-best prospect in Florida by MaxPreps.com … Member of district championship team … Logged 87 tackles, including 6.5 sacks … Member of regional runner up team … Named 2011 first team FACA All-District 7 … First team All-State and all-county as a senior …  Second team all-county in 2010.

Keon Brown

DB, 5-11, 170. Fr.

Oldsmar, Fla. / East Lake HS

Prior to Coastal Carolina: Tampa Bay Times’ second team All-Pinellas County … Had 37 tackles and eight pass break ups as a senior … Helped East Lake post a 13-2 record and advance to the Florida 7A state semifinal for the first time in school history.

Devontaye Edwards

LB, 6-1, 230, Fr.

Sumter, S.C. / Sumter HS

Prior to Coastal Carolina: Selected first team Division I-AAAA All-State by High School Sports Report as a senior … Led Sumter to a runner-up finish at the 2013 SCHSL Class AAAA Division I Football Championship … Also participated in wrestling and track and field, winning the shot put (55-10) and finishing runner-up in the discus at 4-A state championship as a senior (171-4).

Kyle Fleetwood

LB, 5-11, 225, So.

Stone Mountain, Ga. / Stephenson HS (Univ. of South Carolina)

Spent two seasons at South Carolina, redshirting one, and will have three years of eligibility at Coastal.

2013 (RFr.): Moved to the spur position at the beginning of fall camp after playing strong safety earlier in his career …  Saw limited action, appearing in four games (Missouri, Mississippi State, Florida and Coastal Carolina), all on special teams …  Did not record any statistics … Member of the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

2012 (Fr.): Redshirted as a true freshman.

HIGH SCHOOL: Led his region with a school-record seven interceptions in 2011 … Also logged 49 tackles and 11 pass break ups as the Jaguars went 9-2 in 2011 … Earned AAAAA All-State honors as a senior … Named to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-Area team … Racked up 43 tackles and three interceptions during his junior season while playing for Parkview High in Lilburn, Ga. … Was a three-star prospect, the 38th-best safety and the 47th-best player in the state by Rivals.com … Rated a three-star prospect and the nation’s 48th-best safety by Scout.com … A three-star recruit, the 72nd-best safety and 74th-best player in the state according to ESPN.com … A three-star recruit, the 44th-best safety and the 50th-best player in Georgia by 247Sports.com.
