CCU athletes take time out to read to local school kids

ccu-readCoastal Carolina University student-athletes took time out of their busy schedules on Tuesday morning to read Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” at 22 Horry County elementary schools as part of the United Way of Horry County Caring for Kindergarteners program.

A total of 98 Chanticleer student-athletes representing each of Coastal’s 18 intercollegiate teams plus, members of the cheerleading squad along with coaches and athletic department staff members, read the timeless classic to 98 kindergarten classes. Coastal and United Way of Horry County have partnered for the Caring for Kindergarteners program since 2002 as a way of giving back to the community.

“Partnering with United Way of Horry County to assist with the Caring for Kindergartener program has been an exceptional opportunity to create and establish a mentorship between Coastal Carolina student-athletes and children of our community,” said Coastal Carolina associate athletic director for student-athlete enhancement Cari Rosiek. “The program provides a variety of positive results spanning from kindergartens to senior citizens.  We look forward to participating in this successful event for years to come.”

Following the book reading, the kindergarten students put the book’s lesson into play by drawing a pictures and creating their own individual greeting cards intended for elderly homebound senior citizens in Horry County. The handcrafted card will be attached to one of several hundred baskets stuffed with items especially for senior shut-ins in the United Way of Horry County’s annual “Make Someone’s May Day” program, now in its 13th year.
