CCU baseball opens season today, alters tourney times

The Coastal Carolina baseball team will open the 2012 season this weekend, hosting the Caravelle Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium.

Coastal Carolina opens the weekend tournament with a 4 pm first pitch Friday against James Madison. Saturday’s games were moved up one hour to avoid forecasts for rain late in the day, so Coastal will face Virginia on Saturday at 2 pm. The Chants close out the tournament Sunday at 1p.m. by hosting Boston College.

The Chanticleers are the 2012 preseason favorite to win the Big South championship as selected by the league’s coaches and Baseball America. Baseball America has also selected Coastal Carolina to make the NCAA field of 64 and projects the Chanticleers to play in the NCAA Columbia Regional as the third seed with host South Carolina, second seeded Clemson and fourth-seeded Charlotte.

The Big South coaches and Baseball America also agree that Chanticleer junior Josh Conway is the league’s preseason Pitcher of the Year. Baseball America also picks Conway as the Big South’s top professional prospect with Daniel Bowman listed as the fifth-best pro prospect and Ted Blackman seventh on the list. Blackman was tabbed by Baseball America as the Big South’s top newcomer with Javier Reynoso being selected the fourth-best Big South newcomer.

The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics will continue to hold Select-A-Seat events this weekend for any fans who still need to purchase 2012 baseball season tickets. Members of the Athletics Ticket Office and Marketing Department will be on hand to assist any purchasers at Charles Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
