CCU: Baseball ‘plays’ today; Chauncey joining Johnson

The Coastal Carolina baseball team will hold its first intrasquad scrimmage at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Chanticleers will hold three days of workouts at the Myrtle Beach facility. Games also will be held Sunday and Monday after Friday’s game was postponed due to inclement weather and they are open to the public.

Coastal will open the season Feb. 15-17 hosting James Madison for a three-game series. The first game will be played in Florence at Francis Marion’s Sparrow Stadium. The remaining two games, as well as the remainder of Coastal’s 2013 home schedule, will be played at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Chants return four starters from last season, including centerfielder Jacob May, shortstop Brian Pruett, second baseman Justin Creel and left fielder Ted Backman. Also back are a majority of the pitching staff that finished third in the nation in ERA, including Tyler Herb, Aaron Burke, Ryan Connolly, Austin Wallace, Austin Kerr, Ben Smith and Patrick Corbett.

BICOASTAL BIRDIE: CCU mascot Chauncey will be joining Dustin Johnson, a three-time All-American for the Chanticleer golf program from 2005-07, for Saturday’s third round at the Farmers Insurance Open, played at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif.

Chauncey was invited on two fronts to this weekend’s event. First, this marks the third consecutive season Farmers Insurance has used their tournament to promote collegiate golf by having the pros wear their college logos and colors during the third round – dubbed University Day at the Farmers Insurance Open.

For those who participate, Farmers will award $15,000 and $10,000, respectively, to the college golf teams of Saturday’s top two performers. In addition, Farmers will contribute $500 to the college funds of all players who wear their school colors and logo. Farmers also supports college golf throughout the year as the presenting sponsor of the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Academic Team Awards. Since the award began in 2009, the Coastal Carolina men’s golf team has been recognized as an All-Academic Team as the Chanticleers have posted a team grade point average of at least a 3.0 each year.

Playing on the weekend’s University Day theme, Taylor Made/adidas, who sponsors Johnson, flew Chauncey to Torrey Pines. Chauncey and Johnson will be on the course together as they promote the newest golf shoe on the market, adizero. Not only will Johnson be donning a Coastal logo, but his adizero golf shoes will be Coastal’s official school colors. Also, Chauncey will have some new gear, including a visor and his own new pair of adizero shoes.

Chauncey will arrive in San Diego Friday evening. To track his exciting day with Johnson, fans can follow Chauncey via Twitter (@ChaunceyCCU) or on his Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ChaunceyCCU).
